Deficiency Symptom , Growth Characteristics , and Nutrient Uptake of `Nyoho` Strawberry Affected by Controlled Calcium Concentrations in Fertilizer Solution

Abstract
This research was conducted to induce calcium deficiency symptom and to determine critical concentrations of soil and plant when ¢¥Nyoho¢¥ strawberry revealed Ca deficiency. Calcium deficiency symptom of strawberry began at new leaves causing the edge of them to get dry with tip-burn symptom and the whole leaves get yellowed and fallen off as the symptom proceeds. The treatment of 4.5 mM had the highest dry weight with 8.7 g in each plant and 1.11% of tissue Ca content based on dry matter of whole above ground plant part. The highest fresh weight was also achieved in the treatment of 4.5 mM. The Ca concentration in plant sap of this treatment was about 316 §·¡¤§¸^(-1) based on fresh weight of whole above ground plant part. Calcium concentration in perlite media was determined to be 445 §·¡¤L^(-1) in the treatment of 4.5 mM. The results indicated that the calcium content based on dry weight has to be sustained more than 1.1% to increase dry matter production of strawberry and plant growth is hampered under the soil Ca concentrations lower than 445 §·¡¤L^(-1).
